Matching speech sounds to Sound Pics (graphemes) every day! By putting the 'phonetic symbols for kids' (the Speech Sound Monsters) there, the phoneme is not only clear, and we know which sound they are hearing, but it makes it easier when those letters don't represent those phonemes later on.
We are 'preparing them' to understand the 'complex code' (that letters are used to represent speech sounds eg /s/ in the words sip, is and sugar
and speech sounds can be represented by multiple speech sounds. They are exposed to these concepts in a scaffolded manner, using the 4 Code Levels and by exploring words that are relevant and meaningful to the child at that time (eg their name)

Hard copy or online Code Level readers enable children to blend the target graphemes

Although we have SSP Code Mapping letter formation resources Miss Emma loves the RWI phrases, and has used them within her early literacy intervention sessions. See below - Queensland - 2012.
